Delight Yourself In The Lord

I read a morning devotional the other morning while cleaning up the breakfast dishes. It came from a devotional notepad I have on the window sill of my kitchen window. I purposefully place it there so that throughout the day the devotional thought can be read multiple times.

This particular verse was a verse that I have read no doubt hundreds of times.

“Delight yourself in the Lord and He will give you the desires of your heart.” Psalm 37:4

Delight yourself in the Lord. These words kept coming back to me during the following hours of the day. They repeated in my head that evening as I made dinner. Delight yourself in the Lord. What does that really mean? I was more caught by the first part of the verse but the second part sure does sound nice too… ”and He will give you the desires of your heart.”

The following Sunday as we drove to church, I turned to my husband in the car and asked him, “what does it mean to delight ourselves in the Lord? How do we do that as a couple and as parents?“ During the next few minutes, we talked about what it means to us to delight in the Lord and what it came down to was this:

Enjoy God’s goodness! He is a good good God!

By delighting ourselves in the Lord we want our whole life to be consumed by Him. We want to breathe His love. We want to rest deep in His mercy. We want to meditate on His word day and night. We want to shout thanks for His blessings. We crave to know more about Jesus and His calling for our lives. In good times or in hard times we know that nothing can separate us from His love and His promises WILL NOT FAIL.

I believe with all my heart that the verse I read on a random Wednesday morning pierced my heart in such a way to move me more in the direction I needed to go. I sometimes miss out on delighting myself in the Lord because I am so caught up with the traffic of life. But when we meditate on His word, the spirit revives us and teaches us to relish in God’s goodness!

So today, open your Bible, even if you only have a few moments of silence. Meditate on what the Lord has to tell you. Let it revitalize you. And then go and enjoy God’s goodness!
