“Take A Moment”

There is a very brief scene in the Bible that tells a great story that can be used for motherhood 101.

It takes place in Luke 10:38-42 and tells the story of two sisters Martha and Mary who had opened their home to Jesus. Instead of me paraphrasing or giving cliff notes to the story, just read. It is so much better that way.

“As Jesus and his disciples were one their way, he came to a village where a woman named Martha opened her home to him. She had a sister called Mary, who sat at the Lord’s feet listening to what he said. But Martha was distracted by all the preparations that had to be made. She came to him and asked, “Lord, don’t you care that my sister has left me to do the work by myself? Tell her to help me!”

“Martha, Martha,” the Lord answered “you are worried and upset about many things, but few things are needed—or indeed only one. Mary has chosen what is better and it will not be taken away from her.”

Okay, so for me I am waaaay more of a Martha than a Mary. I am a planner and a check list person. I wake with the first thoughts being “what do I need to get done today…” But you see motherhood is full of being a Martha. I mean it is our job to take care of our littles and keep the bus moving.

But oh how I love verse 41 where Jesus says “Martha, Martha…”

I can almost hear Him saying it..repeating her name twice sets the tone. He is calming her down, for she was “worried about many things.”

The next time we find ourselves getting overwhelmed by the to-do list that WE created for ourselves, let’s hear Jesus speak to our heart. He probably will say our name twice. And the spirit will calm us and we will then see clearly that there is only ONE thing that is needed…JESUS.

And then let’s take what I like to call a “Mary moment.” Sit at Jesus’ feet and listen. Pray, read your Bible, sing a song of praise.

“Mary moments” are the key to it all! It is the ONE thing needed.

“And it will not be taken away from her” or you.

Her Love For Him
