Why I’m Teaching My Kids to Swim

We vacation to the beach almost every summer. It is our happy place, our home away from home.

We love the sunshine and the warmth of the sand on our toes. When we are by the sea we channel our inner creativity as we build sandcastles and drawings in the sand.

But I have a confession. I sometimes pray for a storm to brew. I sometimes pray for the sea to show it’s other side, for my children to see God controlling the winds and waves, and to witness just how quick a storm can come upon us in this life. It is a great time to teach them how to swim. Not to swim in the water but to swim spiritually and how to stay afloat during the tough times of life. The times that go beyond mommy and daddy. The times where our faith knows only one name…Jesus.

Because after witnessing an unsettled sea… the sunshine that breaks through the clouds is cherished a little bit more. The sand feels different under our feet and the tide has brought hidden seashells that we never would have found if the storm had not come upon us.

So let‘s teach our kids to swim. Let’s teach them to see Jesus before, during, and after the storm. It will serve them well and it will help them stay afloat during life’s not so sunny days. It will give them their “constant compass” for any change in weather that might come upon them.
